Awesome Weekend!

August 29th, 2007 by Ellie

This past weekend Eric and I really took advantage of all the fun things to do in Austin. On Saturday morning we took Reese to to the farmer’s market. Unfortunately there wasn’t a huge selection of fruits and veggies, but we did pick up some peppers, apples and some beautiful garlic. Garlic, beautiful? Yes! It really was (and yummy too!) While there we sat for a little while and listened to some live folk music and drank some hibiscus tea and fresh lemonade. It was so fun to see so many happy families out together. There was even a huge pot belly pig, but I forgot my camera so you are just going to have to use your imagination!

After the farmers market we donned our bathing suits and hiked up the Barton Springs Greenbelt to find a swimming hole. It didn’t take long before we found a beautiful pool with a small waterfall (pictured). It was so fun to actually swim with Reese. We had never done that before, and I think she really liked it.

She stayed mostly around the edge because where we were was pretty deep, but occasionally she would swim out to us. After a while she signaled she was ready to go by only hanging out on-shore.

After we showered up and washed Reese, we met up with the Colemans to head downtown to watch the Redbull Flutag. No idea what that is? Neither did I! Basically Redbull constructed a 3 story high ramp out over Towne Lake. The object is to build a device, push it off the ramp, and hope that it glides down to the water. Whatever craft went the farthest, wins.

There were a ton of entries to the contest, most with really elaborate costumes and dance routines. Then the team would charge the end of the ramp and push their object off of the end, with someone riding it! Most of the craft’s crashed into the water (to the crowd of 80,000’s (!) delight) but a few actually made it a little ways out. We were able to camp out our spot pretty early, so before the show started we worked to keep Amelia shaded (it was REALLY HOT!) and just watched her dance along with the music. She is sooo unbelievably cute. She even took a few steps!

On Sunday I worked in the garden. After talking to the experts at the nursery, I decided to put in the rest of the plants and just make sure that they stay watered. It looks pretty good, they just need to fill in a little bit. We are working on getting quotes to put a stone wall up around the garden, so I can look forward to that. I will post pictures later this week of the garden so far.
