Good Dog! Good Humans!

July 28th, 2006 by Ellie

Hello everyone!! Well, it’s starting to get hot out. I keep asking everyone “is it going to get hotter than this?” and they literally laugh in my face. I hear that the middle of August and the beginning of September are the worst, so you may want to check up on us during that time to make sure we are still alive!

The summer has been pretty fun so far. We have spent a lot of time playing and training the doggy, and we are happy to announce that we all passed the Canine Good Citizen test last week! It is an obedience test put on by the AKC where the owners have to prove that their dog can complete 10 obedience tasks. She had to pass all 10 in order to get the title, and for all of you that know Reese, you can imagine how nervous we were leading up to the test! Any dog that wants to be a service dog must pass this test in order to go on to further training. Even though we have no plans for Reese to be a service dog, we still thought it would be a good way to help her to be a good family dog. It was a really fun thing for Eric and I to do together, and it definitely took both of us to pass the test (Eric did all of the walking tests, I did the command ones.) Next up Reese and I are going to take some agility classes, and hey, you never know- you might see us on TV some day doing agility competitions!! Hehehe.

Have I ever talked about how crazy it is living in Texas? You’re probably asking, “crazy in what sense?” Well, about once a week we see some strange bug or insect or animal that we never encountered before in California. First it was the scorpion, then the funky white with black spots beetle (which was about the size of the palm of my hand) then a strange insect called a mud dobbler, a walking stick that looks like a blade of grass, and about a 100 other creatures that we can’t even name- the list goes on and on. Well, this morning I saw my very first (alive) armadillo. Ok, YOU KNOW YOU’RE IN TEXAS WHEN you see an armadillo walking around your neighborhood. It was enough to make me do a double take. You just don’t expect to see that!

I think that will be the title of one of my upcoming posts: “You know you’re in Texas when…” That’ll be funny….
